Opening Hours & Admission

The Library and Photographic Collection are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The entrance is at Via Gregoriana 30 and access is possible with a valid user ID card.

Summer closure and reduced opening hours in August
The library and photo library close for 14 days in mid-August each year, the week before and the week after August 15 ("Ferragosto").
In the week before and in the week after the closure the Institute is open in reduced opening hours: 9:00-17:00.

Admission to the Collections of the Institute

Candidates must have at least a Ph.D. degree in History of Art or Architecture. In exceptional cases Ph.D. students can be granted temporary admission if they present a letter of recommendation from their academic supervisor and a brief summary of their research project (1 or 2 pages).
To access the Library and the Photographic Collection a valid user card is requested. New user cards will be issued Monday: 9:30 a.m.–11 a.m., Wednesday: 3 p.m.–4:30 p.m., and Thursday: 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m. For the renewal of expired user cards a form is available at the reception desk.

Candidates must present:

  • copy of their Ph.D. diploma
  • letter of recommendation from a university, research institute, or academic supervisor on official letterhead
  • completed admission form (see Online Download below)
  • passport or ID card
  • passport-sized photograph.

The ID card is valid for one year. In order to speed the renewal and issuance of new access cards, we ask guests to consult the terms of use and to bring the completed admission form to the Institute.
