Central to the mission of the institute is to support and promote future art historians. A number of publicly advertised pre- and postdoctoral fellowships enable young scholars to pursue their research at the institute. Jobs assisting academic staff in the photographic collection and with various research projects as well as the positions of academic assistants provide further opportunities to support junior scholars. Every year the Hertziana awards two fellowships for guest professors, the Rudolf-Wittkower-Gastprofessur and Richard-Krautheimer-Gastprofessur and grants several short-term fellowships to museum professionals. Once a year the Hertziana organizes a seminar of several days’ duration inviting German-speaking PhD students and recent post-docs to discuss selected topics regards Italian art in front of originals. In addition to this Studienkurs the Hertziana holds another annual course with the scope to introduce young researches to Roman archives and libraries. Regular colloquia, conferences and study days are part of the Hertziana’s academic agenda. These activities as well as the Studienkurs and Archivkurs provide junior scholars with the opportunity for academic exchange with members of staff and external guests. The posts for junior scholars are advertised on the institute’s homepage, in relevant journals, through specialist mailing lists and internet portals (e.g. H-ArtHist / Kunstchronik / Verband Deutscher Kunsthistoriker).
