Christoph Keller studied liberal arts at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin and film at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne. His work is research-based and presented internationally in the form of installations and films, such as Anarcheology and Small Survey on Nothingness (2014), as well as in publications such as Observatorium (2008) and Paranomia (2016). The exhibition Æther – from Cosmology to Consciousness (2011) at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris was his first large scale artistic-curatorial project in an institutional context.
Christoph Keller’s installations frequently resemble experimental configurations, and they use the discursive possibilities of art to investigate the themes of science and its utopias. The Cloudbuster-Project involves reenactments of Wilhelm Reich’s experiments for influencing the atmosphere with orgon energy. In Encyclopaedia Cinematographica and Archives as Objects as Monuments, Keller focuses upon the archaeology of scientific film, the impossibility of objective documentation, and the problem of the archival urge to bring order to comprehensive knowledge. In Expedition-Bus and Shaman-Travel, a mirror-clad camping bus for research trips, the ethnographic viewpoint of science is exposed as a projection of its own culture. Here, the viewer is drawn into the installation and becomes a field researcher. Keller is ultimately concerned with linking the methods and procedures of scientific work with the spatial as well as psycho-physical experience of art.
Exhibitions (selection): Encyclopaedia Cinematographica, KW-Berlin (2001); Cloudbuster-Project, MoMA PS1, New York (2003); Observatorium, Kunstverein Braunschweig (2008); Aether - de la Cosmologie à la Conscience, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2011); Sharjah-Biennale (2017); Il Mondo in Fine, Galleria Nazionale, Rome (2018/19).
