Tricontinental Circulations: Visual Politics and Transnational Struggles
With the First Tricontinental Conference in Havana (1966), the efforts of the revolutionary Cuban government were ratified with the configuration of a transnational movement of resistance and solidarity in the Global South (that included Latin America, Africa and Asia). The Tricontinental built an effective visual apparatus via cinema, photography as well as poster production that integrated the struggles of the three continents, creating an imagined community connecting revolutions around the world (from Vietnam to Central America and Nicaragua).

However, the anti-imperialist imperative and the Third World agenda and visual arsenal of the Tricontinental went beyond these spaces reverberating on the visual politics of the artists around the world from 1968 onwards. Visual models, collective practices, artistic and curatorial dispositive and modes of action circulated throughout the Atlantic, connecting artistic and political projects from distant cities such as Paris, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Venice, Madrid or Lisbon.

Paula Barreiro López is Full Professor of contemporary art history at the Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès and member of the FRAMESPA.
