Materialität und Medialität

Der Schwerpunkt Materialität und Medialität widmet sich der wechselseitigen Beziehung zwischen der Herstellung von Objekten und der Generierung von Bedeutung. Die in diesem Zusammenhang behandelten Fragestellungen gehen zurück auf aktuelle Forschungen zum Textilen. Die Materialbetrachtung von Textilien spielt seit Gottfried Semper eine besondere Rolle in der Kunsthistoriographie. Die Erforschung von Textilien erfordert sowohl neue ökonomische, soziale und materielle Ansätze in der Kunstgeschichte, von der Leinwandmalerei bis zur Tapisserie, als auch die Berücksichtigung globaler Entwicklungen in den Bereichen Matetrial, Technik und Produktion. 

Im weiteren Sinne beinhaltet die Erforschung von Materialien sowohl den komplexen Umgang der Kunstschaffenden mit materiellen Widerständen als auch die Art und Weise, wie sich Materialien im Laufe der Zeit physisch und in Bezug auf ihre Rezeption verändern. Von der Gewinnung und Beschaffung der Rohstoffe bis hin zu den sinnlichen Eigenschaften der fertigen Produkte kann die Untersuchung der Materialität eines Objekts die Geschichte der Arbeit, des Handels, der Technologie und der Umwelt aufzeigen. Dadurch lassen sich Themen einbeziehen, die gemeinhin jenseits des kunsthistorischen Zuständigkeitsbereichs angesiedelt werden. Gleichzeitig ist die Medientheorie ein nützliches Instrument, um zu untersuchen, wie das Medium sowie die Entstehung und Verbreitung neuer Medien das Verhalten von Kunstwerken bestimmen. Sowohl Materialität als auch Medialität wirken sich auf das ästhetische, soziale und rituelle Verständnis von Kunstwerken aus. Die Untersuchung von Materialien lädt zur Entwicklung kunsthistorischer Ansätze ein, die Geografien und Chronologien auf neue und herausfordernde Weise umspannen. Der Schwerpunkt Materialität und Medialität steckt durch die Bereitstellung einer Reihe von methodologischen Werkzeugen den Rahmen für eine neue Betrachtung der visuellen Kultur ab, die neues Licht auf kanonische Kunstwerke werfen und gleichzeitig vernachlässigte Objekte in größere kunsthistorische Erzählungen integrieren kann.
