Prof. Dr. Bernd Nicolai, Emeritus Architecture History and Monument Conservation, University of Bern
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Müstair Monastery, one of the most important Carolingian and Romanesque monastery complexes, is located at a historical interface between north and south in the Grisons Alps, close to the main Roman road from Verona to Augsburg, the Via Claudia Augusta, where diverse contacts and transfer processes between the Mediterranean and northern Alpine worlds can be identified.
The CONNECTED SPACES summer school would like to use this inspiring location to discuss dissertation projects and advanced master's theses on the topics of
- artistic/architectural networks,
- contact zones of different cultures,
- innovative concepts of ‘space’,
- monastic and urban infrastructures
in an interdisciplinary setting. The focus is on the fields of art and architectural history, but applications from other cultural studies and humanities disciplines are also welcome. Short presentations are planned, as well as roundtables, which may result from the application or be suggested in the application, in order to promote interactive exchange. The program also includes a visit to the abbey and its collections as well as surrounding objects and infrastructures in order to question the presented concepts.
Travel and accommodation costs for those traveling from European countries are covered. The number of participants is limited to 15.
Please send your application with a description of your dissertation project or master's thesis of max. 2,000 characters and a short CV of 500 characters (in German or English) by June 1, 2025 to:
Prof. Dr. Tanja Michalsky (Tanja.Michalsky@biblhertz.it) and Prof. em. Dr. Bernd Nicolai (bernd.nicolai@unibe.ch).
