"An Albertinelli and a Giulio Romano – a good start!" With these words, Henriette Hertz (1846–1913) expressed her satisfaction with the first purchase she made for her art collection, in 1890, among which the devotional painting today known as Giulio Romano's Madonna Hertz. During the following decades, supported by her agents and advisors, Jean-Paul Richter, Ernst Steinmann and Ludwig Mond, Hertz would go on to acquire a significant number of other artworks, mostly dating from the Italian Renaissance. The exhibition, which centers on the freshly restored Giulio Romano drawing, offers insight into various aspects of late 19th-century collecting practices, such as the acquisition, study, restoration, display, and publication of art works. On display are prints, drawings, and books from the Bibliotheca Hertziana’s holdings, all related to the Villa Lante frescoes and to Hertz’s particular enthusiasm for Giulio Romano and his school.
