Humanist Cultures in Colonial Latin America

This talk explores the construction of these men’s identity by tracing the connections of their literary and artistic devices to Classical antiquity. Showcased in Juan de Castellanos’s Elegies of Illustrious Men of Indies, these notions are also visible in the artistic commissions tying these identities to newly conquered territories.

Patricia Zalamea is professor of art history and former dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. She received her PhD from Rutgers University and completed her undergraduate studies at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy. Her research centers on cultural heritage, history of the print, Global Renaissance art and Colonial Latin America in a global context. In addition to developing the first art history undergraduate program in Colombia (2010), she is one of the founders and board members of the Colombian Chapter (CCHA) of the Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art(CIHA), as well as an advocate for public policies on cultural heritage, experimental humanities and the place of liberal arts in Latin American higher education. She is currently editor of the journal H-ART.
