Archaeology in the Drawings of Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael

Carmen C. Bambach, curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will give the opening keynote lecture for “Touched/Retouched: Paper across Time (1400–1800),” a workshop made possible with support from Getty through The Paper Project initiative.

In this lecture, Bambach gathers expertise and evidence deriving from her three landmark exhibitions on Leonardo (2003), Michelangelo (2017), and Raphael (upcoming, 2026) to shed light on how an archaeological approach to drawing can inform our understanding of early modern drawing practices.

Carmen C. Bambach is Marica F. and Jan T. Vilcek Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She holds a PhD from Yale University. Throughout her career, she has curated numerous exhibitions at the Met, including shows on Leonardo da Vinci (2003) and Michelangelo (2017). Her forthcoming exhibition on Raphael will open in spring 2026. Her award-winning books include Leonardo da Vinci Rediscovered (2019) and Michelangelo Divine Draftsman and Designer (2017).
