Guasti: Preventive Destruction During the Italian Wars (Panel Session at the Renaissance Society of America Annual Conference)
Join us for a panel session on preventive destruction as a military strategy and its consequences on the architectural, artistic, and religious landscape of Early Modern Italian cities.

This session at the Renaissance Society of America’s Annual Conference examines the guasto, the wartime demolition of urban areas for military defense during the Italian Wars (1494-1559). Speakers will shed light on this practice through case studies from Treviso, Verona, Padua, Perugia and Messina. Papers will examine the complex political, social, and artistic dimensions of the guasto, including the relationship between demolition, temporary military architecture, its long-lasting effects on the cityscape, and how it impacted communities and their artistic heritage, discussing the objects and sources related to the clearing of churches and monuments. https://rsa.confex.com/rsa/2025/meetingapp.cgi/Session/8186

Scientific Organization: Chiara Capulli, Bibliotheca Hertziana (MPI). This event is taking place with the support of the Italian Art Society.
