The Technical Study of Bernini’s Bronzes: Art History, Conservation, Material Science
The Technical Study of Bernini’s Bronzes is a collaborative multi-disciplinary project that has begun a comprehensive technical study of all of Bernini’s complete oeuvre in bronze. In the past year, the travelling team has studied bronzes in North American and Australian museums and will continue technical studies in Europe in 2023-2026.

In this workshop, three representatives from the team, Evonne Levy, Jane Bassett, and Lisa Ellis will present the project’s guiding ideas, including an emphasis on the 17th-century founders and systems by which multiples were produced. We will provide an overview of the project’s technical methods, its model of close interdisciplinary collaboration, and initial results from technical studies of 25 Bernini bronzes, including contributions from the material scientists on the team. In the afternoon, there will be a discussion with invited respondents and the public.

Evonne Levy is Distinguished Professor of Early Modern Art at the University of Toronto
Jane Bassett is Head, and Senior Conservator at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles
Lisa Ellis is Conservator, Sculpture & Decorative Arts at the Art Gallery of Ontario
