Freedom of Movement, by Nina Fischer and Maroan el Sani

The Bibliotheca Hertziana is screening Freedom of Movement, a short film by the artists Nina Fischer and Maroan El Sani exploring the urban and architectural legacy of the Fascist era in Rome. The screening and the accompanying Q&A build upon the institute’s recent Field Seminar at the Foro Italico and the EUR, where Hertziana fellows examined the material, design, and structure of monuments and buildings and discussed their multivalent meanings. The screening continues the conversation, framed through Fischer and El Sani’s artistic intervention as well as current debates on the topic.

Carmen Belmonte, an expert of fascist and colonial legacy in Italy and the convener of last year’s conference A Difficult Heritage: The Afterlife of Fascist-Era Architecture, Monuments, and Works of Art in Italy, will provide an introduction and moderate the Q&A with the artists.
