Exhibition
Around 100 photographs illustrate Hilde Bauer’s activities as photographer in Italy in 1934-1943, among them photographs of people and places in the Abruzzi as well as her work for art historical research at the Bibliotheca Hertziana and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence.
The exhibition Hilde in Italia. Arte e vita nelle fotografie di Hilde Lotz-Bauer | Art and Life in the Photographs of Hilde Lotz-Bauer shows the photographer's activities in Italy in the 1930s and early 1940s. Trained in art history and photography, Hilde Bauer became the first - quasi in-house - photographer at the Hertziana in 1934. She moved to Florence in 1939 and continued to work for the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence and its director Friedrich Kriegbaum until she left Italy in 1943. In addition to the art and architectural photographs on display, there is also a rich collection of photographs of people and places in the Abruzzi, which she took with her Leica. The exhibition brings together around 100 photographs from the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Rome), the Kunsthistorisches Institut (Florence), the Hilde Lotz-Bauer Archive (London) and the Archive of Franz Schlechter (Heidelberg).
Exhibition curated by F. Kappler and C. Lotz with contributions by U. Dercks and G. Wolf (KHI), J. Röll, R. Schallert and T. Weddigen (Bibliotheca Hertziana), Museo di Roma in Trastevere, Piazza di S. Egidio, 1/b, 00153 Roma RM
