Public space in Belarus is dominated by
monuments that represent the official history. Its most important aspects are
the Great Patriotic War and the Soviet victory. The three invited artists all
reclaim space in different ways. They narrate alternative histories or critique
the official narrative through the construction of ephemeral or performative
monuments. These can be very brief moments taking place in urban or rural
surroundings. The ephemeral materials or temporal media used are a reaction to
the impossibility of claiming public space and a deliberate aesthetic decision
to counter the (relative) durability of the official narrative represented
through bronze and stone sculptures. The event also reflects on the rich
history of the dialogue between official and often contested unofficial
monuments in Belarus throughout the twentieth century.
